About
This evergreen shrub or small tree, native to coastal East Africa including Kenya, typically grows to 2 metres or more. It features simple, alternate elliptic leaves with bristle-toothed margins and bright yellow flowers. These are followed by striking fruits with one to five black, ovoid drupelets suspended from a persistent red calyx, earning it the common name 'Mickey Mouse plant'.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, including coral-derived coastal soils, and tolerates semi-shade to full sun. It is an excellent choice for ornamental planting in Kilifi gardens, fitting well into coastal thickets or garden beds.

Ochna is a slow-growing plant until established, requiring moderate water once mature but tolerating seasonal drought. Ensure well-drained soil and avoid frost; be aware that prolific bird-dispersed seeds can lead to invasiveness in some introduced areas.
