About
This evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows 1-6 metres tall, featuring rough greyish bark and glossy, dark green leaves that can reach up to 21 cm long. Its bright yellow flowers, with five petals, are followed by a distinctive fruit: the calyx turns vivid red, contrasting dramatically with one to five glossy black drupelets that resemble Mickey Mouse ears. This subspecies, Ochna kirkii subsp. multisetosa, is further distinguished by its larger, thinner leaves with prominent parallel veins and very evident close setae at the margins.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, it thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, including those derived from coral. It performs best in semi-shade to full sun conditions and can be used as an ornamental specimen plant, hedge, or accent in various garden settings. As it is native to coastal Kenya, it is well-suited for restoration efforts in local riparian forests, thickets, and coastal evergreen forests.

This plant exhibits a moderate growth rate and, once established, has moderate water needs, tolerating periods of seasonal drought. It is sensitive to sudden environmental changes and is not frost-tolerant, making it well-suited for tropical climates. Propagation is primarily achieved through seeds, which germinate readily.
