About
Ochna holstii is a deciduous shrub or tree, typically growing 3–30 metres tall, often retaining its foliage as an evergreen. It features smooth grey or grey-brown bark and simple, alternate, oblanceolate to obovate leaves with distinctly toothed margins and prominent venation. Bright yellow flowers mature into black, ellipsoid drupelets, which are conspicuously displayed on enlarged, persistent deep red sepals. The wood is valued for its density and durability, used in furniture and construction, and the tree is also planted ornamentally.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable species is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden, thriving in various habitats from lowland woodlands to montane forests. It can be planted as an ornamental shade tree or a specimen plant, preferring full sun and well-draining soil. It tolerates seasonal dryness once established.
Growing notes
Ochna holstii prefers regions with moderate to high annual rainfall (800–1400 mm), typically distributed in two wet seasons, but shows tolerance to seasonal dryness. Propagation is possible from seed or cuttings.
