About
This evergreen shrub or small tree is indigenous to tropical East Africa, including Kenya. It is characterised by leathery, obovate to oblanceolate leaves with dense net-veining and finely toothed margins. Bright yellow, star-shaped flowers develop into purplish, subspherical drupes, which are strikingly framed by persistent, bright red calyx lobes as the fruits mature to glossy black.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this species prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is an excellent choice as an ornamental specimen, or for creating a formal or informal hedge in a Kilifi-coast garden.
Growing notes
This plant exhibits moderate growth, typically reaching 1.5-3 metres tall. Once established, it requires consistent moisture but tolerates brief dry spells; ensure the soil does not become waterlogged. Care should be taken as the fruits are considered toxic if ingested, and the species may spread into naturalised areas.
