About
This medium-sized deciduous tree can reach up to 25 metres tall, forming a spreading crown. It has bi-pinnate leaves with numerous small, linear to oblong leaflets, and produces creamy-white flowers in spikes. Distinctive flattened, wine-red pods, up to 30 cm long, develop and release winged seeds. The tree's bark is typically rough and grey-brown.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for larger gardens or restoration projects in the Kilifi region, especially in areas with deep sandy soils and a high water table or consistent moisture. It functions well as a shade tree, but requires ample space due to its mature size.
Growing notes
Germination from seed can be challenging and requires careful management. Once established, this tree thrives with consistent moisture, particularly in sandy soils, benefiting from proximity to a high water table. Young trees require regular watering, though established plants are generally hardy.
