About
Newtonia erlangeri is a tree typically growing 6-20 metres tall with a spreading crown. Endemic to East tropical Africa, including southern Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania, it thrives in riverine woodland, semi-evergreen bushland, and ground-water forests at elevations around 50 metres. The species is valued for its wood, used in house building and charcoal production, and a bark decoction is traditionally used to treat tympanites. Its leaves are compound, featuring 1-4 pairs of pinnae.

This endangered tree is ideal for restoration projects along the Kenya Coast, particularly in areas mimicking its natural riverine or groundwater forest habitats. It is suitable for larger landscapes requiring a robust, native shade tree, especially in low-lying bushland and riverine areas, given its presence in Lamu and Garissa Districts.
