This small to medium-sized evergreen tree can reach up to 30 metres tall, featuring a straight, cylindrical bole and a spreading crown. Its ovate leaves often have bluntly toothed margins, while its small, white or cream-coloured flowers develop into distinctive 5-ridged, obconic capsules. Native to coastal evergreen forests, the timber is valued for construction and fuel, being moderately heavy and durable.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for larger Kilifi gardens or restoration projects, this emergent tree provides excellent canopy cover. Plant in full sun with adequate spacing to allow for its mature size, thriving in well-drained coastal soils.
Growing notes
Once established, it is well-suited to the coastal climate, requiring moderate water. The timber is susceptible to borer and termite attack, thus care should be taken if using the wood.
