About
Mystroxylon aethiopicum is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, typically growing up to 12 metres tall. Its young branches are covered with short grey hairs, and it features leathery, glossy dark green leaves with prominent yellowish venation. Small, yellowish-green flowers appear in clusters, followed by small, fleshy, ovoid fruits that ripen to a bright red and are edible.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it excellent as a conical specimen tree or planted in groups to form a dense hedge, providing a natural barrier. It is naturally found in coastal woodlands at elevations from sea level up to around 250 metres.
Growing notes
This tree is considered slow-growing but hardy. It exhibits drought tolerance once established, requiring watering every 2-3 weeks in dry conditions. Propagation is possible from seeds or cuttings, with seeds typically germinating within two to three weeks.
