Mundulea sericea is an attractive shrub or small tree, typically 0.5 to 7.5 metres tall, with pale, corky, and deeply furrowed bark. Its alternate, imparipinnate leaves are covered in silky, silvery hairs. Showy, pea-like flowers in shades of violet, mauve, or lilac appear in terminal clusters during spring and early summer, followed by velvety, linear pods that often persist on the branches.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained, preferably sandy or gravelly soil, making it suitable for Kilifi's coastal environment. It works well as an accent plant or in small gardens due to its moderate size, and its non-invasive root system allows planting near built areas or pools.
Growing notes
A relatively slow-growing plant, Mundulea sericea is hardy and drought-tolerant once established, requiring only moderate watering. It grows well in containers and can be pruned to maintain a compact form.
