About

This is a medium to large evergreen tree, often featuring a spreading crown of glossy green leaves. It produces abundant small, sweet, purplish-black fruits that are edible and highly attractive to local birdlife and other wildlife.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, the African Mulberry makes an excellent specimen or shade tree in larger gardens and landscapes. It also has potential for ecological restoration, providing food and habitat.

Growing notes

It exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, though it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. This hardy species requires minimal care, though fallen fruit can create some mess below the canopy.
