About
This deciduous tree grows 6-12 metres tall, occasionally reaching 15 metres, and is characterised by a distinctive bottle-shaped trunk for water storage. Its light green, edible leaves are large and have a milder flavour compared to other Moringa species. The fragrant flowers range from cream to pale yellow, leading to elongated, sometimes twisted, reddish pods that contain winged seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this drought-resistant tree thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade. It adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils, from sandy to heavy clay, and is suitable for use as a specimen tree, providing shade, or as a living fence.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, African Moringa can reach 3 metres in its first year and often begins flowering and fruiting within 2.5 years. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, requiring moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry deeply between applications.
