About
Monanthotaxis fornicata is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree or scandent shrub native to tropical Africa. Its elliptic to narrowly obovate leaves are typically glabrous above and slightly pubescent beneath, often displaying a glaucous appearance and thickened margin. The scented flowers feature yellow or creamy-yellow petals, and the mature fruits are reddish or orange, cylindrical to ellipsoid monocarps with a finely tuberculate texture.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and is well-suited for restoration projects in disturbed areas or forest edges along the Kilifi coast. As a scandent shrub or small tree, it can also be grown as a specimen plant, requiring adequate space for its climbing habit.
Growing notes
Monanthotaxis fornicata prefers regular watering once established and can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil mix and kept moist, while cuttings taken from mature wood also root well in a moist, sandy medium.
