About
Mimusops riparia is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing up to 20 metres tall, with a spreading crown. Its leaves are subcoriaceous to coriaceous, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, measuring 7.5–13 cm long. Cream-coloured flowers appear singly or in groups in leaf axils, leading to subglobose berries that ripen to pale yellow or reddish-yellow, up to 3.5 cm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is strictly riverine, thriving in riparian zones along watercourses in coastal Kenya. It performs well in well-drained sandy soils under full sun, making it ideal for restoration efforts along rivers and for providing shade in moist, tropical landscapes.
Growing notes
Mimusops riparia is a slow-growing tree that prefers warm, moist conditions. It can be propagated from seeds, which germinate best in a warm, moist medium between 25–30°C, or from cuttings.
