About
This annual or perennial herb is known for its distinctive leaves that fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, and also close at night. It typically grows as a sprawling, prickly sub-shrub with reddish-brown stems. Its bipinnately compound leaves feature numerous small, linear-oblong leaflets. Spherical to egg-shaped, reddish-pink flower heads are followed by clusters of flat, prickly pods containing 1-5 seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for the warm, humid climate of the Kilifi coast, this plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and a wide range of moist, well-drained soils. It makes an interesting ornamental specimen due to its unique leaf movements, but can also be used for ground cover or erosion control. Due to its invasive potential, careful placement is advised to prevent unwanted spread.

Growing at a fast rate, this frost-sensitive plant can be propagated from scarified or pre-soaked seeds, which typically germinate within one to two weeks. It prefers consistently moist conditions but should not be overwatered. While generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to pests such as red spider mites. Caution is advised as the plant contains mimosine, an alkaloid that can be toxic in large doses, and its stems bear prickles.
