About
An evergreen shrub or small tree, this species can reach up to 15 metres tall and features obscurely 4-angled branchlets. Its ovate to elliptic leaves are complemented by small, white flowers that mature into distinctive cobalt blue fruits, 5-8 mm in diameter. This plant is naturally found in coastal sand forests and dune thickets of East Africa.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in coastal conditions, this plant is well-suited for Kilifi gardens in full sun or partial shade. It can be utilised as a specimen shrub, for mixed borders, or for restoration in sandy, well-drained soils.
Growing notes
This is a low-maintenance evergreen that prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Once established, it requires moderate watering, allowing the topsoil to dry between sessions.
