About
Maytenus undata is an evergreen shrub or small tree, growing 2–10 metres tall, with a rounded crown. It features glossy, thinly leathery leaves with wavy or gland-tipped serrated margins, and smooth, grey-brown bark that becomes finely fissured with age. Small, fragrant, pale yellow to greenish-yellow flowers appear in clusters, followed by 3-lobed capsules that split open to reveal seeds covered in a shiny, orange to reddish-brown aril, attracting birds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable species thrives in full sun or semi-shade and well-drained, loamy soils, suitable for the Kilifi coast. It serves excellently as an informal hedge, screening plant, specimen tree, or for restoration in coastal bush, and is also suitable for containers.
Growing notes
Easy to grow from seeds or cuttings, the Koko tree is slow-growing and highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a water-wise choice for gardens.
