About

This small to medium-sized tree typically grows 2-10 metres tall, with grey-brown bark that is smooth when young and flaky with age. Its compound leaves feature 2-4 pairs of leaflets, often with fine yellowish hairs on the underside. Striking bell-shaped yellow flowers, flecked with maroon, appear in racemes on older wood from spring to summer. The tree produces long, spirally twisted, bean-like capsules, up to 50 cm, that mature to dark brown and release winged seeds.

Where it works in Kilifi

Suitable for a warm, sunny spot in a Kilifi-coast garden, thriving in well-drained, fertile soil. Its modest size makes it an excellent focal point for small gardens and courtyards, or can be used in restoration efforts in riverine fringes and rocky areas.

Growing notes

This species is relatively slow-growing and requires modest amounts of water once established, though it benefits from occasional watering. It is sensitive to frost and cold, performing best in warm, sunny conditions. Propagate from seed or stem cuttings.
