About
This deciduous tree, typically 4-25 metres tall, has rough, flaking grey-brown bark. Its bright green, oval leaves are about 10 cm long, and small, fragrant greenish-yellow flowers appear before or during new leaf growth. The three-lobed golden-brown fruits split open to reveal distinctive metallic blue-black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens and restoration projects, this pioneer species thrives in full sun or partial shade in well-draining soil. It can serve as a shade tree or for timber production, adapting to forest edges and disturbed areas from sea level.
Growing notes
This fast-growing tree is deciduous in dry seasons. Seeds benefit from soaking in cold water for 12 hours before sowing and sunlight to stimulate germination. Avoid planting near cacao as it is a host for a fungal pathogen.
