About
This dioecious shrub or small tree typically reaches heights of up to 6-13 metres, often with a scrambling growth habit. Its distinctive opposite leaves are heart-shaped to broadly ovate, with one leaf in each pair being noticeably smaller, and the undersides feature stellate hairs and small domatia. It produces greenish-yellow, fragrant flowers in spike-like racemes, followed by deeply 3-lobed, greenish-yellow fruits about 8-10 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
An excellent choice for restoration projects or as an ornamental shrub in a Kilifi-coast garden, it thrives in dappled shade to bright indirect light, avoiding harsh direct sun. It prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. As a pioneer species, it can help establish new woodland areas.
Growing notes
This species exhibits a high growth rate and is drought-tolerant once established, requiring watering only once every 2-3 weeks to prevent root rot. It is well-suited to tropical climates. The seeds are considered poisonous, so caution is advised.
