About
Maerua triphylla var. johannis is a variable shrub, often presenting with trifoliate leaves, though simple leaves or a combination can occur. Its leaves are typically hairy, but occasionally smooth and shiny. The cylindrical fruits of this variety are 2–3 cm long and 0.5–0.8 cm across, characteristically covered with dense yellowish hairs. This plant is indigenous to bushland and grassland habitats, occurring at altitudes between 400 and 2300 metres, including regions within coastal Kenya.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous shrub is ideal for restoration efforts in rocky or degraded areas of a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil.
Growing notes
Maerua triphylla var. johannis exhibits a moderate growth rate, with observed annual increases of 1.8–2.3 mm in diameter and 10.6–14.8 cm in height. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, but thorough watering and mulching are important during initial planting to help retain soil moisture. Caution is advised, as branches and roots of Maerua species may contain toxic substances.
