About
This shrub, or occasionally a small tree, is characterised by its dull green, trifoliate leaves, with the central leaflet often being larger. It produces small, green-white flowers featuring prominent stamens. The fruits are cylindrical, 5-10 cm long, pale yellow to creamy brown, furry, and frequently constricted between the seeds. It is found in bushland, grassland, and riverine habitats at altitudes of approximately 60–200 metres.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for restoration projects in rocky areas along the Kilifi coast, this plant thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil, though it can tolerate various soil types, benefiting from added organic matter.
Growing notes
This species exhibits a slow to moderate growth rate, with reported annual height increases of 10.6–14.8 cm. Propagation is effective from fresh seeds, which show good, fast germination within two weeks, or by cuttings. Once established, it is adapted to dry bushland conditions. Care should be taken with its roots and branches, as they may contain toxic substances.
