Maerua sessiliflora is a shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 5-7 metres tall. It features small, leathery, obovate to oblong-obovate leaves, rarely exceeding 8-10 mm in length, which are arranged alternately or clustered along branchlets. The flowers are notable for having numerous white stamens but lacking petals, developing into cylindrical, markedly constricted, and warty fruits up to 3 cm long. This species is native to dry shrubland environments and is known to have edible fruits and medicinal applications.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Kenya, this shrub or small tree is well-suited for dry shrubland environments along the Kilifi coast. It thrives in full sun exposure and can be utilised for habitat restoration or as a resilient specimen in a garden setting.
