About
This evergreen shrub or small tree can reach up to 7 metres tall, often standing out in the dry season when other plants are leafless. It features thickly leathery, rough, shiny green leaves, and produces dense clusters of creamy-whitish to yellow flowers with purple centres and numerous long stamens. The ripe fruit is round, shiny red, and typically pendulous.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, performing well in various soil types. It can serve as an attractive ornamental specimen or be integrated into restoration plantings in dry woodland or rocky areas.
Growing notes
Propagate by seed or cuttings. Establish with thorough watering and mulching to retain moisture. Once established, its preference for hot, dry woodlands suggests it is well-adapted to low water conditions.
