About
This much-branched shrub or small tree typically grows 1-3 metres tall, often developing a large, swollen perennial rootstock. It features blue-green, slightly fleshy leaves and bears small yellow-green flowers without petals, followed by globose, yellow-orange fruits up to 3 cm long. Found in dry bushland and rocky areas, its fruits and roots are traditionally used for food and medicine, though roots require careful preparation due to potential toxicity.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-tolerant shrub thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy or rocky soils, making it excellent for Kilifi coast gardens. It is ideal for use as an ornamental specimen, a hardy hedge, or in restoration plantings in dry bushland areas.
Growing notes
A hardy, drought-tolerant species once established, it regenerates quickly from its rootstock and benefits from pruning after flowering. While its roots have traditional uses, caution is advised as they can be toxic if not properly prepared.
