About
Maerua crassifolia is a small evergreen tree, typically growing 3-10 metres tall, with a spreading, often twisted, much-branched crown. It features fleshy, oblong leaves and produces white, sweet-scented, petal-less flowers, followed by brown, constricted, cylindrical pods. Native to arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, this species is classified as 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List (2020).
Where it works in Kilifi
In a Kilifi-coast garden, this drought-tolerant tree thrives in full sun and is adaptable to sandy or clay soils. It serves well as a specimen tree or for restoration in degraded areas, given its resilience to low rainfall conditions.
