About
Maerua angolensis is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, typically growing 7 to 15 metres tall, with a rounded crown. The bark is smooth and grey, flaking to reveal yellowish-orange patches. Its simple, glossy dark green leaves are often drooping, and the sweetly scented, white to pink flowers lack petals but feature numerous prominent stamens. Distinctive fruit pods resemble a string of beads, up to 22 cm long, which remain on the tree for several months.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-resistant tree thrives in full sun to semi-shade and tolerates well-drained, sandy, and rocky soils, including poor conditions. It is suitable for medium to small gardens, offering ample shade, and can be used as an ornamental tree in dry coastal landscapes.
Growing notes
Young plants exhibit a fast growth rate, up to 80 cm annually, which slows to about 50 cm with age. Once established, it requires minimal watering, preferring the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. The tree is hardy and resistant to drought.
