About
This moderately fast-growing tree can reach 4 to 20 metres in height, forming an open, spreading crown with an umbrella-like silhouette. It features fine-textured, feathery bipinnately compound leaves that are dark green, with new growth sometimes appearing red. Small, fragrant white puffball flowers are followed by flat, twisted, dark brown seed pods.
Where it works in Kilifi
An excellent choice for a Kilifi-coast garden, this tree thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. Its high drought and salt tolerance make it ideal as a specimen, shade tree, or for seaside plantings.
Growing notes
Lysiloma latisiliquum is moderately fast-growing and, once established, is highly drought-tolerant, requiring minimal supplemental water. It is generally hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -5°C, but should be protected from severe frost. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain a strong structure and prevent branch breakage.
