About
This small to medium-sized evergreen tree is native to the coastal regions of East Africa, including Kenya, typically growing at the landward edge of mangrove swamps. It features succulent, obovate leaves with slightly toothed margins and an indented tip, arranged spirally on the shoots. Small white flowers appear in short spikes, followed by woody, vase-shaped fruits containing a single seed. Its timber is strong and durable and has been traditionally used for construction and charcoal.
Where it works in Kilifi
An excellent choice for coastal Kilifi landscapes, particularly for rehabilitating mangrove areas or establishing new ones in saline to brackish conditions. It thrives in full sun and typically sandy or muddy-sandy soils, often on the drier, landward side of mangrove zones. Plant as a specimen, for ecological restoration, or for its durable wood.
Growing notes
This species is adapted to tropical coastal environments and is hardy once established in appropriate conditions. It exhibits a moderate growth rate, tolerating salt and requiring minimal watering once its root system is developed in wetland or coastal soil. It often develops subsurface looping roots rather than prominent above-ground pneumatophores in Kenyan habitats.
