About
This evergreen tree typically reaches 3-15 metres, though it can grow up to 20 metres. Its grey, cracked bark and bipinnately compound leaves, featuring numerous small, oblong leaflets, are distinctive. It produces spherical, white to pale cream flower heads, approximately 12-30mm in diameter, which develop into flat, brown pods 9-19 cm long containing 8-25 seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for full sun exposure in a Kilifi-coast garden, thriving in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soils, including sandy coastal areas. It is excellent for providing shade, controlling erosion, enhancing soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, or as a dense hedge. Due to its vigorous nature, strategic planting with adequate spacing (e.g., 1-2m for hedges or 3-10m for alley cropping) and regular management are advised.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, it is drought-tolerant once established but cannot withstand waterlogged conditions or heavy frost. Intensive management, including regular pruning, is crucial due to its potential to become invasive in disturbed tropical environments. The foliage contains mimosine, which can be toxic to some animals if consumed in large quantities, so caution is advised for livestock grazing.
