About
This much-branched deciduous shrub or tree typically grows 1-6 metres tall, featuring drooping branches and a spiky habit. Its smooth, dark grey bark and distinctive brown, thread-like growths resembling cotton wool covering the stem base and main roots are key identifying features. Small, greenish-yellow flowers give way to edible, reddish, ovate fruits, approximately 9-14mm long, which are much liked for their sweet and sour taste.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it suitable for dryland restoration or as a specimen tree in a Kilifi-coast garden. Allow ample space for its spreading, much-branched habit, as it can grow into a sizeable shrub or small tree.
Growing notes
It is a fast-growing, deciduous species with high drought tolerance once established, requiring watering approximately every 2-3 weeks. This plant prefers warm temperatures and cannot tolerate frost; regular pruning is recommended to manage its spreading habit.
