About
This evergreen woody climber, reaching 18-30 metres, features glossy dark green leaves and small, scented whitish to yellow flowers. It produces large, edible, globose to pear-shaped fruits, up to 15 cm in diameter, which ripen from green to pale orange with sweet, slightly acidic white flesh. The plant contains a milky, rubbery sap.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this vigorous climber thrives in semi-shade to full sun and prefers moist, well-drained sandy soils, common in coastal areas. It serves well as a specimen climber or for creating natural screens, offering both aesthetic value and edible fruit.
Growing notes
Growing at a fast rate, this species prefers moist soil and performs best in areas with high rainfall, once established. It is a hardy tropical plant.
