About
This robust liana or scrambling shrub can climb up to 40 metres, featuring deeply fluted stems that resemble bundled ropes and strong, hooked tendrils. It produces fragrant white, creamy or yellowish flowers, followed by edible, spherical yellow berries up to 10 cm in diameter with a juicy, sweet pulp. The plant yields milky latex from its stems and is typically found in rainforest edges, riverine forests, and high-rainfall woodlands.
Where it works in Kilifi
This robust liana is ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden in areas with well-drained, fertile soil and high humidity, thriving on forest edges or in riverine settings. Plant it as a specimen climber against a sturdy support structure or tree, providing ample space for its extensive growth.
Growing notes
Once established, it requires consistent moisture in well-drained soil, particularly during dry periods. While generally robust, its slow growth rate means it recovers slowly from disturbances. The plant requires a very sturdy support structure to accommodate its eventual size.
