About

Striking deciduous tree famous for its enormous sausage-shaped fruit hanging on long stalks. Dark maroon night-blooming flowers pollinated by bats. Sacred and medicinal in many African cultures.

Where it works in Kilifi

Open positions with room for the spreading crown and falling fruit (don't plant over parked cars or seating!). Tolerates a range of coastal soils with adequate water.

Growing notes

Moderate growth. Prefers deeper soil and benefits from supplementary water in the first dry seasons. Hardy once established. A favoured tree for street and park planting where space permits.
