About
This evergreen liana or scrambling shrub features glossy dark green, oblong-elliptic leaves with conspicuous net-veining. It produces dense clusters of creamy-white flowers, which are followed by hairless, black, sometimes slightly two-lobed fruits when ripe. The species is typically found in the margins of evergreen forests and along streams across tropical Africa.
Where it works in Kilifi
This climbing shrub is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden in areas mimicking forest margins or along streams, thriving in partial shade to full sun with moist, well-drained soil. It can be grown on trellises, pergolas, or allowed to scramble as a groundcover or over banks.
Growing notes
Propagate this plant from seeds sown in well-drained, sandy soil, kept consistently moist, or from semi-ripe cuttings rooted in similar conditions under bright, indirect light. Once established, it is a frequent liana growing up to 4 to 7 metres tall, flowering from February to October.
