About
Justicia sp. aff. fittonioides is a nearly stem-less herb, closely related to *Justicia fittonioides*. Its round, ellipsoid leaves, measuring about 5 by 4 inches, are distinctly white-blotched with a cordate base and minute pubescence on the underside's nerves. The plant produces small flowers, scarcely 1/3 inch long, arranged in axillary spikes, followed by glabrous, 4-seeded capsules. This species is native to Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, often found in well-foliated riverine valley systems with ample runoff water, in areas with predominantly sedimentary rock and alkaline soil, frequently near natural geothermal hot springs.
Where it works in Kilifi
In a Kilifi-coast garden, this species would be suitable for shaded or semi-shaded areas that mimic its natural riverine valley habitat, providing consistent moisture. It would thrive as a groundcover or understory plant, particularly in areas with good water runoff and alkaline soil conditions.
Growing notes
This herb requires consistent moisture, preferring habitats with good water runoff rather than dry conditions. No specific information on its growth rate or hardiness is available, but the genus generally thrives in tropical to warm temperate regions.
