About
Justicia species are herbaceous plants typically ranging from 20 cm to 2 meters in height, found in various habitats across Kenya, including forest understories, grasslands, and disturbed areas. They feature opposite leaves, which can be lance-shaped or ovate with smooth margins, and produce two-lipped flowers often arranged in terminal spikes or axillary clusters. Flower colours vary, including pale blue, yellow, or white with lavender or purple markings. The fruit is a two-valved capsule.
Where it works in Kilifi
This herbaceous Justicia thrives in partial shade or full sun and can be suitable for restoration projects, ground cover, or mixed borders in a Kilifi-coast garden. It prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types.
Growing notes
Justicia species generally exhibit a fast to medium-fast growth rate, reaching maturity within a year. They require consistent moisture during active growth but can tolerate dry conditions once established. Being tropical perennials, they prefer warm conditions and are tender to frost, although some species can withstand light frost.
