About
Justicia gendarussa is an erect, branched shrub, typically growing to 1.5 metres tall, with dark purple stems. Its leaves are lanceolate, 4–14 cm long, and can be white, green, or grey, often displaying prominent purple veins beneath. Small, tubular white or pink flowers with purple spots or streaks emerge in spikes at the branch tips or leaf axils throughout the year.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in partial to full sunlight and prefers moist, well-drained loamy or slightly sandy soils. It is suitable for planting in groups along roadsides or as a low hedge in a Kilifi-coast garden.
Growing notes
Justicia gendarussa is a fast-growing species that requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. It grows year-round in tropical climates and can be pruned regularly to maintain its shape, though this may reduce flowering.
