About
Justicia anisophylla is a tropical shrub typically growing 1-2 metres tall, distinguished by its unequal leaves where the larger leaf measures 7-14 cm long by 3-6 cm wide and is oval to sword-shaped. The smaller leaf in each pair is about half the length of the larger one and is unequal at the base. This species naturally occurs in lowland and mid-altitude wet forests and rocky areas across East Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania.
Where it works in Kilifi
In a Kilifi-coast garden, this tropical shrub thrives in partial shade and requires rich, moist, well-drained soil. It can be planted as a standalone specimen or integrated into mixed borders, benefiting from its natural habitat in wet forests and rocky areas.
Growing notes
This species grows at a fast rate, reaching 1-2 metres in height, and prefers consistent soil moisture, though it should not be waterlogged. Protection from direct midday sun and temperatures below 7-10°C (45-50°F) is recommended.
