About
This jasmine is typically a small shrub with slender, trailing or twining climbing stems that can reach up to 1.5 metres in length, growing from a woody rootstock. Its leaves are opposite, simple, and typically obovate-elliptic to lanceolate, measuring 1-5 cm long, dull green, and often hairy on both surfaces. The plant produces very sweetly scented, creamy-white flowers, either solitary or several together, with a tube 13-26 mm long and 6-9 linear to narrowly elliptic lobes. The fruit consists of two subglobose lobes, 5-8 mm long, which turn black when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal Kenya in scrub and woodland, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is suitable for Kilifi gardens as a ground cover, a scrambling shrub in mixed borders, or trained as a liana on a trellis or fence.
Growing notes
This plant is not frost-tolerant but is well-suited to warm climates. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from moderate watering during dry spells; avoid overwatering. Pruning is best done after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new blooms.
