About
Ipomoea shupangensis is a robust climber or liana, with stems reaching up to 6 metres long. It features dark glossy green leaves that are ovate or triangular, up to 13.5 cm long, and cordate at the base. The flowers are pure white, lilac, or pinkish with a darker centre, forming a cylindrical tube 5-8 cm long, and are found in lax axillary inflorescences. The fruit is a globose, leathery, hairless capsule.
Where it works in Kilifi
This robust climber is well-suited for a Kilifi coast garden, thriving in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained sandy soils. It can be planted to cover fences, pergolas, or other structures, or for ecological restoration in woodland or riverine settings. Provide adequate support for its climbing habit.
Growing notes
A fast-growing perennial climber, it can reach up to 10 metres, so provide strong support. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant but will flourish with regular watering, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged to prevent root rot. Pruning in spring can help manage its vigorous growth.
