About
This perennial liane can grow up to 6 metres, featuring stems that are mostly smooth or sparsely hairy. Its thin leaves are ovate to nearly round, measuring 5.5–19 cm long, with a pointed tip and a rounded base. Flowers are rose or purple, narrowly funnel-shaped, 4–7 cm long, and appear in dense clusters. It produces ovoid capsules containing subglobose seeds covered in brown hairs.
Where it works in Kilifi
As a vigorous climber, this species is ideal for training on trellises, pergolas, or fences in a Kilifi-coast garden. It thrives in partial shade, mimicking its natural forest understorey habitat, and requires well-drained soil. It is also suitable for ecological restoration projects in coastal rainforest areas.
Growing notes
Propagated easily from seeds or cuttings, this plant prefers a warm, moist environment during establishment. Once mature, it is likely to tolerate periods of dryness, reflecting its native seasonally dry tropical biome habitat.
