About
This clustering fan palm, typically growing 1-6 metres tall, often forms clumps of 2-6 stems but can appear solitary. It features distinctive blue-grey to greyish-green, stiff, waxy, fan-shaped leaves and produces irregularly top-shaped fruits that ripen from green to glossy dark brown. Native to coastal and lowland regions of eastern Africa, it is commonly found in sandy soils.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for full sun exposure in a Kilifi-coast garden, this palm thrives in sandy, well-draining soils and tolerates saline conditions. It is an excellent choice for a specimen tree, providing shade, or for coastal dune restoration, requiring ample space for its spread.
Growing notes
A slow-growing palm, it requires minimal water once established, exhibiting excellent drought tolerance. Care should be taken during planting to avoid damaging its taproot, and established plants are moderately tolerant of salt and wind. Its petioles have hooked teeth, so caution is advised during maintenance.
