About
Hymenodictyon parvifolium is a small African tree or scrambling shrub, occasionally growing as a liane up to 10.5 metres tall. It is characterised by elliptic to oblanceolate leaves, 1-9 cm long, and produces fragrant white, greenish, or yellow flowers that can have red tinges when in bud, arranged in terminal spikes or panicles. The species develops reddish-brown, ellipsoid capsules containing distinctive winged seeds and is found in low-altitude woodlands, mixed bushlands, and dense coastal thickets on sandy soils.
Where it works in Kilifi
This tree or scrambling shrub is suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens, thriving in full to partial sun and sandy soils. It can serve as a specimen plant, provide light shade, or be incorporated into restoration efforts in areas mimicking its natural coastal thicket and woodland habitats.
Growing notes
As a deciduous species, Hymenodictyon parvifolium requires moderate watering, especially in sandy soils where it grows naturally. It is known to form swollen roots that can reach up to eight centimetres in diameter.
