About
Huernia archeri is a fascinating succulent herb characterised by fleshy, upright, and angular stems that form dense clumps. It produces unusual star-shaped flowers, typically dark red to purple, which can be dotted or veined and possess a waxy, fleshy texture. These intriguing flowers emerge at the base of the stems and sometimes release a scent to attract pollinators.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to Southeast Kenya, including the Kilifi area, this succulent thrives in bright light or partial shade, ideally underneath larger shrubs or plants. It requires well-draining, aerated soil, such as a succulent potting mix, and can be planted in raised beds outdoors.
Growing notes
This species exhibits moderate growth, forming branching clumps of thick, toothed stems. It requires careful watering, with the substrate allowed to dry completely between waterings, especially during dormancy to prevent rot. While preferring temperatures between 10°C and 27°C, it can tolerate up to 38°C in shade and down to 4.5°C when dry, but must be protected from frost.
