About
This scrambling or erect perennial shrub grows 1-5 metres tall, featuring sharply four-angled stems and aromatic, velvety, grey-green leaves. Its small white or cream flowers develop into attractive, ribbed, bright orange, berry-like fruits that are edible and relished by birds. It is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa in open woodlands, grasslands, and forest edges.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this shrub thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. It can be used to line an informal shrub border, as a specimen plant, or in restoration efforts.
Growing notes
A hardy garden plant in tropical climates, it performs well with established water needs, tolerating seasonally dry conditions. To encourage new growth, prune at least once annually.
