About
Sea Hibiscus is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a rounded, spreading canopy, typically reaching 3-10 metres in height. It features large, heart-shaped leaves, bright green above and hairy grey-green beneath. Its striking, trumpet-shaped flowers open bright yellow with a deep red centre, gradually changing to orange and then red before falling within a day. The plant produces small, round seed capsules.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade and a wide range of soils, from well-drained to waterlogged, acidic to alkaline. It is ideal for coastal gardens in Kilifi as a specimen tree, shade provider, privacy screen, windbreak, or for erosion control, tolerating salt spray and moist conditions. Space plants at least 1.8-3 metres apart to allow for its spreading habit.
Growing notes
Sea Hibiscus is a fast-growing plant, typically adding 0.75-1.5 metres of new growth per year. It requires regular watering to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods, though established plants show moderate drought tolerance. It is hardy in tropical and subtropical climates but can be invasive in moist environments, so regular pruning in spring and late summer is recommended to manage its size and shape.
