About
Heinsia zanzibarica is a straggling to erect shrub or small tree, typically reaching 1.5–4.5 metres tall. It features elliptic to oblong-elliptic leaves, 5–15 cm long, which are densely velvety hairy beneath. The plant produces numerous sweetly scented white flowers with slender greenish tubes, followed by dry, bristly oblong-globose fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal areas of Southeast Kenya, this species thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes, often found in forest edges and coastal dry forests. It prefers fertile, well-drained, sandy loam soils and can be planted as a specimen or integrated into restoration plantings in sunny to partially shaded garden locations.
Growing notes
Adapted to seasonally dry conditions, it requires moderate watering once established. It generally prefers well-drained soils and is suitable for tropical coastal environments.
