About
This deciduous shrub typically grows up to 3 metres tall, featuring opposite, elliptic to ovate leaves that are mostly hairless. It produces sweetly scented, white flowers with a yellow fringe in the throat, which develop into ellipsoid, orange fruits crowned by persistent calyx lobes. The edible fruits are 8–12 mm long, and the plant's stem has traditional uses for arrow shafts.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun, particularly in sandy soils or riverine thickets. It makes an excellent specimen plant or can be integrated into a native hedge or restoration planting.
Growing notes
This plant prefers well-drained, sandy soils and can tolerate seasonally dry conditions once established. It can be propagated from seed, although challenges with seed viability have been noted.
