About
Haplocoelopsis africana is an evergreen shrub or small tree, growing up to 10 metres tall, characterised by slender, initially coarsely hairy, grey-brown branches and compound olive-green leaves. It produces small, yellowish-green flowers in axillary inflorescences, which develop into yellow, subglobose capsules approximately 2.5 cm wide. The hard and tough wood of this species is locally utilised for firewood, poles, and tool handles.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous species is well-suited for restoration projects in Kilifi's lowland dry and wet coastal forests, contributing to canopy structure and microclimate. It thrives in well-drained, typical coastal soils, and is found in habitats ranging from full sun to partial shade.
