About
Habenaria stylites is a small to medium-sized terrestrial orchid native to East and Southern tropical Africa, including Kenya. It features an erect stem with two large, fleshy, ovate to kidney-shaped basal leaves pressed to the ground, and smaller leaves further up the stem. This tuberous geophyte produces white, faintly scented flowers on an upright terminal stalk during winter.
Where it works in Kilifi
This robust herb thrives in grasslands at forest edges, glades, and wooded grasslands, often found on rocky slopes and old termitaria at elevations up to 1600 meters. In a Kilifi-coast garden, it would suit a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil, possibly in a rockery or at the fringes of a woodland garden.
Growing notes
Habenaria stylites grows from underground tuberoids and requires precise watering, with good drainage being essential. During active growth, keep the potting mix evenly moist but not waterlogged, reducing watering significantly as the plant enters winter dormancy to prevent tuber rot. It prefers moderate light levels and temperatures above 10°C, as it is not frost-hardy.
